Joe Hill

The NY Times best selling writer, Joe Hill has a feature interview in this issue of Writer's Digest. He's the son of Stephen King. The article tells about growing up in the King home where both mother and father were published writers. The days were spent writing, reading, and discussing books. Perfect! Oh, it must have been glorious in this home and so nurturing for a writer. It would be cool if Joe Hill could come to Seattle and speak.

Joe Hill wanted to make sure that he was recognized for his talent as a writer so he didn't use the name King. He's received won several coveted writing awards and honors for his work.

His books:
20th Century Ghosts
The Heart-Shaped Box
Horns
NOS4A2

"One of these lines you hear a lot is, Live like it's your last day on earth! That's a really a terrible piece of advice for a writer. You kind of have to live instead like you're immortal."--Joe Hill.

Writer's Digest and The Writer

I have subscribed to Writer's Digest and The Writer for years. I'm constantly inspired and learn with each issue.

On the front cover of the July/August issue of Writer's Digest is Khaled Hosseini who wrote THE KITE RUNNER. He's actually coming to Seattle. Can you believe it! He's coming on Tuesday, June 4th at 7 p.m. This event will be held at the Town Hall at 1119 8th Avenue. It's free and open to the public. Only in Seattle................. I'm going! there are also great articles like, "Vitamin C for your thriller."

In the July issue of The Writer are more great articles like "Sorkinese," tips from Aaron Sorkin and "Let words collide," which is about writing short. There is notice of the PNWA Conference coming to Seattle on July 25th to 28th. I need to get more information. I want to go since all I have to do is get on bus 41 and get off at the Convention Center stop.

Fremont Troll

Here's the Fremont Troll. Fremont is the end of the universe. It says on a sign so it's true. I love this troll and every time I used to visit I asked to be taken to visit the troll, just like a little kid. I wrote a children's story about the troll and need to work on it. I haven't visited the troll since I have moved here. I need to figure out how to get there on the bus. All I have to do is to call Metro but I haven't done it yet. It seems like my never ending list just keeps me busy.

Post Office Box

I'm going to have to get a post office box for my mail. I've been thinking that I need to do this for awhile. I hate to have the extra expense but I need to know that I am getting my mail. The problem isn't with the Post Office. I applaud the U.S.P.S. and the safe delivery of mail. Where I am having problems is that packages by UPS or FedEx are delivered to the office of my apartment building and sometimes I have a tough time retrieving them. I keep track of all the packages that are to be delivered that are ordered. I pay for everything that comes in the mail so I want my stuff whether it is from L.L.Bean or Zumba or the Disney Movie Club. Yesterday when I went to get the mail because I had a notice from FedEx on the outside of my mail box, I waited by the office door as the manager was talking on the phone. I should have just left. She motioned me inside and waved me to the back room and pointed. So I went in and tried to find my box. I didn't feel comfortable looking for it so I left. Later she called to say that she had my box and to come down for it. It was from Zumba. One time when I told her that I was waiting for something in the mail, she had it in her office drawer and it had been opened. It was a remote that I had ordered from Samsung for my TV. Maybe she thought it was going to be extra interesting considering the shape and size and needed to see. Most of the time I am told there is no package even though by my records it should have been delivered a week or two before. It's frustrating. Sometimes I wonder if I get all my stuff. One time I didn't receive a package and called to say that it didn't come so they canceled the order and removed the charge. It had been a month since I should have received it. Then I talked to someone else who works in the office and she gave me the package so I called and let the business know that I received the package and they put the charge back on my credit card. I don't understand this.

Right now I have been waiting for two Disney movies that should have been received two weeks ago that are paid for, another package from Zumba, and a shirt to wear to work and a new swimming suit from L.L.Bean.

University of Washington

I have ordered materials from the University of Washington Bothell. It is close to my apartment--about a 10 or 15 minute drive. It has a MFA program in creative writing. I am seriously considering this. It would be a dream come true. I would be able to teach on a college campus somewhere plus write. This would be the most wonderful thing in the world for me to pursue this. I am thinking fall 2014. My life would be full and brimming with fun and potential.

Psychic

I have walked by this little shop that says there is a psychic probably three times on University Street. I have thought about going in. Today I went by and then came back and rang the bell. It said you only had to wait 3 minutes. I waited 8 minutes but no one came. Maybe I'll try again sometime. After all, I have never gone to a psychic before and I know that people have all kinds of abilities. Maybe the next time........................

Living an authentic life

I'm very happy in Seattle. I was thinking today that the main reason is that I am living an authentic life. My actions are in line with my values. I am just being myself. Actually I have always been a happy person and evaluated my life often to make sure that my life is in line with what I feel is important.

I have so many opportunities to learn and grow in Seattle. I'm so grateful to live here. This is the first time that I can make my own decisions about what I want to do and not have to consider anyone else. I can just live and do within the limits of my resources, and ability.

I moved a block from a gym so I could be a gym rat. Health and fitness are my first priority. I'm not there three hours a day, like I should be but I am gearing up for it. I would like to take two zumba classes a day and a weights class. I have zumba dvds at home and other fitness dvds. I just got Gilad dvds in the mail today! Hurray!

I can go downtown on the bus for only 75 cents one way as a senior and visit the Art Museum or Aquarium or Seattle Public Library or Pike Place Market or go to the Seattle Symphony. Once in awhile I want to see a Broadway play. There is so much to do here. I love it. I really believe that Seattle is a mecca for the arts. Perfect place for me.

There are so many wonderful choices here. It's all here in Seattle. It's all close. I'm so happy here. Every day I am grateful to live in Seattle. Living in Seattle is heaven. Alsea was hell. Even though I don't have close friends here, as I didn't in Alsea, there is so much more here to do and see. I am close to everything.

I'm busy every day working on my endless list of things to do. Once in awhile, I just do something fun. It was fun going on the bus today to have lunch with my son, Ben. It was perfect weather today. I love it a little on the chilly side and sunny. It was supposed to be 60 today. I think that perfect weather is 45 to 70. Nothing above 70 or I start to melt into the floor. I really don't like hot weather. The weather in Seattle is perfect with no extremes of hot or cold. I don't mind the rain at all.

I'm happy here. I wish I had moved here a long time ago.

The Crab Pot

Today I went downtown on the bus to meet Ben for lunch, I wanted to go near the ocean and have lunch at the Crab Pot. Fish and Chips are only $7 and change. It's a great buy and it's really good fish. I love being by the ocean. We had a great time talking, laughing, joking around, and catching up.

This is my son, Ben. I'm very proud of him.

Harbor Steps Gallery

When I was downtown today to have lunch with my son, Ben, I stopped at the Harbor Steps Gallery. I wanted to show Ben my favorite new Seattle artist. I knew he would love the paintings and he did.

I love these paintings. The colors are bright. I love Seattle as the subject matter. It's fun and he has great technique. His name is Michael Birawer. His small paintings are $200 and his large ones are $1000. I think this is a bargain price for anyone wanting to invest in art.

Afghan massacre

In the Seattle Times this morning, it says that Staff Sgt. Robert "Bales to plead guilty in Afghan massacre." We shouldn't be at war in the first place. We shouldn't be sticking our nose into every one's business. We shouldn't be going around the world destroying and causing trouble.

There are millions of little boys in this country who to grow up loving to play war and play with guns. They come from families who love the military and everything that it stands for. They are expected to be part of it all. They are taught to kill in the military. They are taught to hate the enemy. They are taught to obey and follow orders.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Robert Bales comes from a nice family and isn't someone who uses drugs or is a criminal. He probably did what he was taught and encouraged to do. I don't agree with these values. I think that the military needs to change and families across the country need to quit sacrificing their children to war.

I understand. My father was State Commander of the VFW in Montana, a 32nd degree Mason, a Shiner, and more. Once in awhile I give a few dollars to the VFW and to the disabled veterans in memory of my father. But I think there is a better way to live. It's not okay for good young men to come back with Post Traumatic Stress and limbs amputated, put back on, and then sent back into war. This isn't okay.

Yes, you have to stand up against things that are wrong. You use words. You use the law.

I don't like conflict. I don't like anything to do with war. I don't think we should be going all over the world causing trouble. It isn't okay to kill and massacre innocent civilians who aren't coming at you with machine guns trying to kill you. It isn't okay to kill anyone. It isn't okay to destroy anything. It isn't okay to hate anyone.

This is why I appreciate the Scandinavian countries that stay out of all this nonsense.

We should all realize that we should live in peace and get along. That is why I love Seattle. It's a great example of how the world should live.

In my apartment building, there are people who come from all over the world. One family just got back from a vacation in Afghanistan to visit friends and relatives. They are a nice family. I think it is refreshing that everyone can work, live in the same building, and get along.

I applaud Seattle and the people who live here for being a great example of what the world should be.

Samsung

I am a big fan of Samsung. I have a Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere cell phone. The camera on the phone is better than my digital Canon or at least as good. I get great photos on my cell phone. It took me quite a while to get used to it and to fully appreciate all that I have on this phone. I called Verizon several times just to get help on learning how to use it. They were patient and helped me learn to navigate and troubleshoot. Now I wouldn't be without it. My two year contract is up in December and I am looking at another Samsung. Samsung does it better.

My TV is a Samsung and has a perfect picture.

I also have a new Samsung all-in-one computer. I love it. I love the picture quality. It is the best computer I have ever had. It is the computer of my dreams and I'm grateful to have it.

Windows 8

What in the world is all the complaining about? This morning in the Seattle Times is the headline, "Microsoft revives familiar in next Windows version." Oh, good grief. I think there are a lot of whiners and complainers who can't adjust to change out there if they don't see Windows as easy and fun. I've had a different experience. I think this is their best Windows so far.

I love Windows 8. It is innovative, fun, fluid, intuitive, and easy. I haven't heard one person say anything good about it. I don't understand at all. It's all in front of you. Easy as pie. It makes exploring and adventure fun. It's easier to navigate. It's easier to learn. The apps in front of you encourage you to learn and explore into more depth.

There is only one thing that I am not crazy about. I find it annoying that I can't always get back to the bar where I can write in a new web address so I have to click at the bottom left hand corner and go back to the beginning and click on Internet Explorer again. But I figure I just don't know how to use it yet. This is a new computer and I'm still learning about it. If I had a manual on my computer and a manual on Windows 8, there wouldn't be a problem because I could look it up.

I think Microsoft did a bang-up great job!

Seattle

Seattle is heaven. It has everything. It has perfect weather--not too hot, not too cold. It is a cultural mecca. I live only 9 miles from downtown Seattle and I can ride the bus that comes by my apartment building for only 75 cents. There are so many amazing free events, so many that I don't even go to a fraction of all of them. I get to see famous writers at the library. I get to visit the Seattle Art Museum, go to the Woodland Park Zoo, the Aquarium, the Dale Chihuly Museum of Glass, and much more. I get to go to the Seattle Symphony once in awhile. So much is here. Every day is a blessing. I'm grateful to live in Seattle. So many opportunities. I'm very happy here. I'm so glad I moved here. Every morning I am excited to get up and start my day.

Seattle Public Library

Seattle is the best place in the world to live. I can't get over all the opportunities that are here. Every day I am grateful. Every day I am thankful to live here.

The Seattle Public Library, the BEST library has author events all the time. Major published authors with best selling books on the NY Times best seller list come to Seattle and you get to see them here in Seattle.

Khaled Hosseini is coming on Tuesday, June 4th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. He is reading from AND THE MOUNTAIN ECHOED. This is an event that will take place at Town Hall on 1119 8th Avenue.

A mystery author, Judy Dailey will be speaking at the Montlake Branch on Sunday, June 9th from 3 to 4 p.m. about her new book, ANIMAL, VEGETABLE AND MURDER.

Oh, what fun is here in Seattle. What opportunities to learn and grow!

Gilad

Gilad Janklowicz is my favorite fitness personality. I've watched Gilad for years on television and exercised with him watching Bodies in Motion and Total Body Sculpt. Since I have moved to Seattle, I couldn't get the channel that has his shows so I ordered his DVD's last week because his classes are important to me.

Gilad films his shows in Hawaii. I have wished that I could exercise with his cast in the back since he periodically allows people to be part of the class. He always picks a gorgeous backdrop but of course every scene in Hawaii is gorgeous.

Gilad is great. He's amazing plus he is great for the eyes.

24 Hour Fitness

I was trying to leave a comment on the website for 24 Hour Fitness and it refused to process my comment no matter what I did to change it. It was the correct number of words allowed. Maybe they are tired of hearing my suggestions so I copied it and am putting it here:

Yesterday I went to the 4:30 Zumba class at Northgate Seattle. There were new people there in the room. Many I hadn't seen before. Not the usual crowd. When talk of the summer schedule and that  this class is going to be canceled, one new person said that they had rearranged their schedule to come. You really can't keep changing the schedule. People are busy and want to take classes. The classroom brings a lot of people into 24 Hour Fitness.

You need more Zumba classes, not less. You need more Zumba instructors, not less. If 71 year old Irma Fallon of Gainesville, Florida goes to Zumba classes 5 days a week and sometimes 2 times in a day, you want to encourage this. She was featured in Prevention Magazine. Don't discourage health and fitness. Once you have a class and set the time, it needs to be set in stone so people can arrange their lives around it.

You need more Zumba classes. Several times every single day. I want to be able to take two Zumba classes a day. Since I am 65, I'm not always excited about walking out at night. I want to take two classes during the day. A morning and afternoon would be good plus a weights class every day. You need to start Zumba Gold, Zumba Toning, and Zumba Gold Toning, and Tai Chi and Chi Gong, and country line dancing. You need to build more classrooms that are bigger too.

Many people who come to the gym during the day are older so you need the Zumba Gold every day. Not everyone can do all the jumping all the time.

It means a lot to people to take these classes. It means a lot to me. Zumba is the most fun that I have in a week. You want to encourage people to come through your door, not discourage them. You want to consistently have classes, not cancel them. If 20 people are in the class, why would you cancel? Aren't these 20 people who come important? The new person said that she picked the 4:30 time because she is new to Zumba. When it is so crowded, it is hard to see what to do and copy the steps. If you are in the back, you can't see the feet of the instructor. You need a large screen in front to show what the instructor is doing so people in the back can see and duplicate the steps. You could even show videos of the instructors when they fail to show up so class can continue. The instructors should still get paid. Maybe not as much as if it were a live appearance but it would still work for the people who come.

24 Hour Fitness is important to me. Getting fit and healthy is my first priority. I moved a block away so there is no excuse. I love the gym. What I love most is Zumba, Body Pump, and the elliptical. Sometimes my 12 hour part time job gets in the way of my coming to Zumba. Sometimes I think I need to quit my job so I can come but I need the money.

Please have more classes. Please consider that people rearrange their whole lives around a class on the schedule. The class shouldn't change every week or every quarter. Jobs and every day life don't change every quarter. There needs to be more classes, not less. That classroom, since there is only one small classroom should be busy from morning to night with classes with 15 minute breaks between so people can orderly move in and out.

I love 24 Hour Fitness. Please don't cancel classes. If health and fitness is a priority for you, as it should be in our nation, and since this is your business, please schedule more classes, not less. Encourage the Irma Fallons of the world. Don't take away the fun.

Please have more choices in weights classes. Weight training is the most important thing you can do if you are trying to lose weight. I weigh 241 so I have a lot of weight to lose. I need standing abs classes, Body Pump that is just weights and not mixing it up with floor work, and I need a circuit class in the weight machines area.

I pay my $47 a month. I can't afford expensive training for two years, three times a week. So I am taking the Resistance Training class with the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America so I can do it myself.

Bridges in Washington

The Seattle Times this morning has a feature story on the front page with the headline, "7 low bridges hold similar risks." Okay, so there are seven more bridges in Washington. The budget in the state of Washington isn't overflowing with money and the public safety is at risk with these seven bridges so maybe, maybe....the trucking companies who make the profit from running trucks over these bridges should kick in and help pay. Until the bridges are fixed, trucks that could jeopardize the safety of these bridges should not be allowed to cross. Period.

Zumba with Cindy

I just got back from taking a Zumba class with Cindy at 24 Hour Fitness Northgate. She's an amazing dancer and fun. I had a great time. I love Zumba.

I am so inspired by the e-mail in my box today from Prevention Magazine. It has a feature article about six women who lost weight with Zumba.  I am in awe of Irma Fallon of Gainesville, Florida who is 71 and takes Zumba classes 5 times a week and sometimes twice a day! I want to be just like Irma!

Central Market in Shoreline

My new favorite store that I discovered yesterday is Central Market in Shoreline about three miles from my apartment. It's a gorgeous store. It's huge. It has fresh produce that doesn't stop. It keeps going and going and going. The fresh fish looks like Shoreline is right next to the Pacific Ocean...oh, yeah, it is! Chuckle!  : )  Today there were several tanks of live crabs crawling around. My favorite find are the Swedish fruit cookies. I just had to buy one yesterday and I came back for more today. Yes, I know. I don't need to be eating cookies but these are the greatest cookies! Plus they are Swedish cookies!

This store is huge and it just keeps going into little nooks and crannies that seem to be mini stores. I found two aloe vera soap bars for 99 cents that are really nice and would make great gifts. There is so much to look at, so much to explore. There are unusual food items. The store is set up in such an inviting and friendly way. I saw these great reuben sandwiches with a rye bread that is part dark and light rye. Those looked really good. It looks like they have everything you could want and more.

I've been inching out a little bit at a time here in Seattle. I don't know why it took me so long to walk in the door of Central Market. It's a great place. I'm going to love shopping there. In fact, I wouldn't mind living close enough to walk there for groceries. Maybe. However, I think I might rather live in the UW district. I don't know what the future will bring or what will open up. It must be fun to work there. It's a great store. The people who work there are nice.

UW Certificate in Screenwriting

I'm so excited. I feel like my life is coming together and I'm really happy about the direction. I know that writing, exercise, and health are central to my life and what I want for my future.

I just signed up for the free fall preview class for the University of Washington Certificate in Screenwriting. I've written two screenplays. I took a class in screenwriting in Corvallis, Oregon. I've also taken two different classes on screenwriting by Michael Hauge and Christopher Vogler. I was also part of a screenwriting group in Eugene for a short time. I also took a screenwriting class in Eugene. I also went to a Willamette Writers monthly meeting in Eugene to hear Cynthia Whitcomb speak who is President of Willamette Writers and writes screenplays.

Yes, I want to write screenplays. I have several books on writing screenplays--actually one whole shelf. I'm excited at the thought of writing screenplays. I want to write first draft very visual novels and then turn them into screenplays. When I was in elementary school, I wrote television screenplays or at least attempted it.

Oh, I am jumping up and down in my heart and am so happy just at the thought. I sure hope this works. I sure hope. I sure hope. I love screenplays. I love movies. Movies inspire and give hope or they can take you down a dark path and scare the hell out of you. They make people want to rise up and be better. They help you escape from a world that isn't all that perfect for the couple of hours as you sit there munching popcorn and drinking diet coke.

I'm going to be excited to attend this free preview. The University of Washington is one of the finest universities in the country. I really want to be part of it. I want to belong and learn. I want to ride the bus and be a student.
